Ex Rare Stegosaurus Gular Armor (Neck Armor) Dinosaur Fossil Jurassic CO 1
For sale is something so special you may never see it for sale again. This is a complete example of Stegosaurus gular armor (neck armor) from what might be the most recognizable and famous dinosaur of all time. This armor plate was found in the Morrison Formation of Moffat County, Colorado. This fossil was personally identified by the Stegosaurus expert Paleontologist Dr. Ken Carpenter!
Stegosaurus is known for its back and neck plates but it also had specialized scutes or armor plates covering the underside of its neck. These fossils are rarely found since they were just embedded in the skin tissue and easily washed away while the animal was being deposited.
This particular specimen was found in association with dozens of other gular scutes along with a couple of rooted teeth and skull bones of this animal. The head and neck of the animal must have been buried very quickly for all these armor plates to survive in association with each other. The last picture shows the matrix block with the rooted Stegosaurus teeth, skull bones and gular scutes all in natural association. These fossils were all found at the same site but the rooted teeth and skull bones are staying in my personal collection for now!
Gular armor was embedded in the skin of the neck of Stegosaurus and acted as a sort of chain mail to ward off attacks from animals like Allosaurus, Torvosaurus and Ceratosaurus.
I shared all of these associated fossils (the rooted teeth, skull bones and gular armor) with Paleontologist Dr. Ken Carpenter, one of the leading experts on Stegosaurus. He indeed confirmed that all the fossils were from Stegosaurus and positively identified this fossil as a gular scute from the neck of a Stegosaurus. You really can’t ask for more of a Certificate of Authenticity than that!
This may be your only chance to own one of these rare fossils as you almost never see them for sale!
