1 5/8" RARE Suchomimus Tooth Tenere Desert, Niger w/ Serrations
This listing is for an extremely rare Suchomimus tenerensis dinosaur tooth from the Elrhaz Formation of the Tenere Desert in Niger, Africa. Fossils from this geologic formation are about 110-112 million years in age and represents an area of very lush vegetation and a lot of biodiversity but is now an arid desert.
The tooth measures 1 5/8" in length and comes with its own gem display case. The tooth is in great shape but has some wear or small missing pieces at the tip. This tooth is very special because it is extremely crisp and distinct serrations down the length of the tooth. The serrations are small but these positively identify this tooth as being from a Suchomimus tenerensis!
Suchomimus tenerensis was a Spinosaurid dinosaur closely related to Spinosaurus found further North in Morocco and Baryonyx found much further North in Great Britain. Teeth from this species are rarely offered up for sale since fossils of them are so difficult to get a hold of. Not many fossil come out of this region into the fossil market so when I saw these I was excited to purchase them, add one or two to my collection and sell the others.
These are easily told apart from Spinosaurus teeth since the preservation in this region gives the enamel a different color and the preservation a little more of a worn look. The sediment at the base and roots of the tooth is white which is distict for this region but the main way you can tell the difference is that Suchomimus teeth have serrations on them! I used a digital microscope to take photos of my Suchomimus teeth for sale and all of them have serrations. Some of the teeth have fairly worn serrations but others still have very crisp serrations.
Other species that have been discovered in the Elrhaz Formation are the infamous "Super Croc" Sarchosuchus, Kryptops, Afromimus and Nigersaurus. This fossil was found in the fossil region of Niger known as Gadoufaoua.
